How do I remove arsenic from my water ? Here in Maine, we have a bunch of private residential wells with high levels of naturally occurring arsenic. There are several ways to remove arsenic. The best technologies are filter media or resin. Reverse Osmosis usually has disappointing results. Most filter media’s can handle both arsenic 3 & arsenic 5. Reverse Osmosis is only effective at removing arsenic 5. Therefore, pre-treatment is required to convert 3 into 5. It gets messy. So fair warning. Buying and installing a Reverse Osmosis system alone may end up being a waste of time & money. That said…. Reverse Osmosis is incredible at removing most other dissolved solids. It certainly has it’s place. Just not arsenic. Also, due to the nature of arsenic & the human body, It is my opinion that we remove arsenic from all the water by installing a filter media based system in the basement or mechanical room to remove arsenic from all the water in the house. Most of these whole house systems will run at about $3,800. (includes installation). Some a little lower. Some a bit higher. It all depends on the installation site & conditions. If you have arsenic in your water, call me. Once we talk and I get a look at a water analysis, I can give you a firm price. 207-907-9772.
Arsenic in private wells ! Every year in Maine more people are discovering arsenic in their well water. It is usually discovered when we are selling the house. A prospective buyer does a routine water test and everybody learns that it’s not all that routine. Arsenic ! Most likely it will need to be fixed before the sale can be closed. Most banks & mortgage companies require a home to have water that meets the EPA Safe Drinking Water Standards… before they will fund the mortgage for the buyer. Please feel free to call me (Chuck) at Mainely Water if you need help finding a “Certified Lab” to do the testing for you. Or… If you have already had it tested and are in need of filtration for Arsenic (or anything else), please check with us for water filtration or water softening needs. Chuck…. 207-907-9772

Water Filters & Softeners in Maine. What’s with that !? So… here it is. Maine cities & towns that take their water from the earth’s surface tend to be “softer” than water taken from deep wells. Well water tends to be “Harder”. So if you live in Portland Maine, your water probably comes from Sebago Lake. Sebago is a “surface water”. Therefore, it is relatively soft compared to a private well in neighboring Windham Maine. Most folks living in Portland Maine and being served by Portland’s city water supply, would see no need for a water softener. The same can be said for Bangor’s water supply and their residential customers. However, there are 10’s of thousands of Mainers that get their water from their own private well. These folks need to look at things differently… very differently. We will discuss Maine well owners in the next post. Meanwhile, if you live on Portland or Bangor city water, be cautious if you are approached by a water softener sales person. Not all folks in this industry are looking out for your best interest. If you want to just chat about your water, feel free to call me… Thank you…. Chuck…. 207-907-9772.
