Water softener Service & Repair is a rare skill set. Most companies will advertise they “service all makes & models”. When you call they come out under the guise of “service” but after 10 minutes of investigation, they just try to sell you a new water softener. Now don’t get me wrong… sometimes that is exactly the best action. But most of the time, its just a scripted “service-to sales”… sales pitch. There are only a hand full of true manufacturers of water softener control valves. Expertise in repairing them is not rocket science. Anybody with a few years in the business should be able to perform effective service if the unit is save-able. If you have a 6 year old water softener that cost you less than $1,200 that is broken down, it would probably cost more to repair than to replace. If you have a 6 year old water softener that is of a better quality it is almost always fine to invest in repairs and save the extra money. What you don’t want to do is spend $800. on repairing a control valve and replacing the resin bed just to have ongoing chronic breakdowns. That’s usually what happens with the cheaper systems. A good service company might offer additional options that make more sense. Every service call is unique. The service person should be experienced in both effective long-term repairs as well as know when it’s time to bite the bullet and get a new water softener.
